Fiat 500 Nuova

The Fiat 500 was built from 1957 to 1975. It was called the Nuova 500 to distinguish it from the Topolino; the new model and the Topolino had nothing in common technically. From 1957 to 1977, including the “Giardiniera” station wagon version and some special models, 3,702,078 Fiat 500s were built.

The “Cinquecento” (“Five Hundred”) had independent suspension, self-supporting body and an air-cooled rear engine. The twin-cylinder in-line engine, a “Gleichläufer” (parallel twin) with overhead valves and a displacement of 479 cm³, produced 10 kW (13.5 hp). The rear wheels were driven via an unsynchronized four-speed gearbox with claw shift, which was locked to the differential. The car reached a maximum speed of 85 km/h.

The front wheels were suspended on upper wishbones and a lower transverse leaf spring that guided the wheel as a control arm and served as a spring and stabilizer. In the steering gear, a worm acted on a toothed segment; the tie rod was tripartite. The rear semi-trailing arm axle had coil springs.

D model (1960-1965) the air vents in the front fascia had given way to turn signals, and the large, teardrop-shaped turn signals on the fenders of the N model were replaced by small, round turn signals. The taillights were larger and more angular overall, with more voluminous aluminum bases and two-tone lenses. Furthermore, the dashboard now had an ashtray starting with the D model. As before, the doors were still hinged at the rear, so-called self-moving doors. The engine now had 13 kW (17.5 hp), so that the 100 km/h limit was achievable as a top speed. The last N models could only be distinguished from the D models by the chassis number. Changes flowed into the current production, partly apparently old stocks were installed or innovations were tried out in advance in small numbers.

The model D offered here in very good condition was registered in Reggio Calabria in 1963. The car had two Italian previous owners and the current owner.
